The Reviews Are Coming In!

Teesta Setalvad’s memoir – Foot Soldier of the Constitution – is already in its second printing. We anticipate that we’re going to have to tax our printer with a great many orders for this book. There is a good reason why people are interested in Teesta’s story. The ruling party has so fundamentally vilified her at the same time as she has been an essential voice for the stifled justice in Gujarat. Finally, Teesta is able to tell her story in her own words without having to answer one canard after another, without allowing the ruling party to define her as a caricature. This is the real Teesta – at least this is her own self-image. It has struck a chord.

For a nice taste of the book, please see this extract in The Wire. It opens with ‘We had a good childhood’, taking us to her home in Juhu by the sea, and ends with ‘in calm anticipation,’ the sea by her side as she struggles with a government committed to injustice. There is another extract at Scroll.in, which has a memorable headline, ‘Teesta Setalvad has written her memoir, and it’s every bit as chilling as you might imagine’.

In Outlook, Prachi Pinglay-Plumber writes that Teesta’s book is ‘revelatory of the commitment of the activist towards her cause’. In Counter Currents, T. Navin does a thorough assessment of the book’s narrative about the pogrom in Gujarat in 2002 and its aftermath. ‘The book is essential reading for those who wish to understand the reality of Gujarat in 2002’, he writes. In First Post, Maya Palit writes on this point, ‘the strength of Setalvad’s memoir lies in her skill of pointing out small but crucial details of the massacre which were apparently overlooked by the Special Investigation Team probing the Gujarat violence — packets of a white chemical substance used by the mob, and the LPG gas shortage in Ahmedabad because gas cylinders were deployed by attackers in Naroda and Gulberg. It is these all but forgotten aspects of the riot that go some way in capturing a crucial era of Indian history, and it’s through them that Setalvad shows us how violence has marred and vitiated the country she grew up in’.

In Straight, Gurpreet Singh writes, ‘Setalvad’s book must be read by those who really want to understand what India is going through and how toxic the social and political environment of society becomes in a majoritarian democracy that stifles any voice of dissent and marginalizes the weak. Above all, for those who think that Modi is completely off the hook, Foot Soldier of the Constitution is an eye opener’. In Asian Age, Amey Tirodkar says that Teesta has ‘reiterated allegations against Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who was chief minister during the riots of 2002’. In Quint, Pallavi Prasad writes that Teesta’s memoir ‘only serves to reiterate her version of what happened in and after 2002, in a collated, accessible document’. In the Indian Express, Pamela Philipose writes that absent the persistence of Teesta ‘a veil of amnesia could have fallen on those events, helped by some of the world’s most sophisticated techniques of mass persuasion. Yet, for an India with a future, forgetting Gujarat is not an option, which is why the Citizens for Justice and Peace, an organisation anchored by Setalvad, Anand and a small band of committed lawyers/citizens, deserves a debt of gratitude’. Philpose, a senior journalist, ends her review with a look back to Emile Zola’s J’Accuse in 19th Century France. Just as Zola pointed his finger at the French elite’s anti-Semitism, Philipose suggests, Teesta points her at the Indian elite for its indifference to the pogrom of 2002.

Mumbai’s Mid-Day covered the book launch in that city. The journalist who came to the event wrote, ‘She was in conversation with senior journalist Sidharth Bhatia, and going by the sheer range of topics they discussed, we know this is one memoir that promises to be a riveting read’. Jayant Sriram of The Hindu offers a nice recap of the book launch. He picks up on an important thread raised by Sidharth – that memory cannot be allowed to lapse. That is one of the strengths of Teesta’s memoir. It refuses to forget.

लगभग 3 साल पहले जब पहली बार तीस्ता से आमना सामना हुआ तो मैं बस उन्हें सुनना चाहती थी, कि जितना अभी तक अख़बार की ख़बरों में उनके बारे में पढ़ा या टीवी पर देखा उससे इतर वो क्या हैं। और अब 3 साल बाद ये किताब पढ़ी तो इस बीच की सारी मुलाक़ातों और अनुभवों के बाद भी लगा कि कितना कुछ जानने को बाकी है। ये किताब तीस्ता का सफ़र है जिसमें बहुत से क़िरदार हैं, बहुत से अनुभव हैं, जितने अच्छे उतने ही बुरे भी, जितने ख़ूबसूरत उतने ही भयावह भी। तीस्ता का नाम जिस किसी ने भी पहली बार 2002 या उसके बाद सुना या पढ़ा वो लोग उनकी भूमिका सिर्फ़ गुजरात दंगों के परिप्रेक्षय में देखते हैं। उन सभी लोगों के लिए ये किताब पढ़ना और भी ज़रूरी हो जाता है ताकि राष्ट्रवाद की धूल हटाकर राष्ट्र के लिए ज़रूरी लोगों को भी जान सकें। 

तीस्ता के तीस्ता बनने की कहानी है Foot Soldier of the Constitution, और जैसा नाम से ही साफ़ है उनकी इस भूमिका की वजह से मौजूदा परिस्थितियों में पहले से भी बहुत बड़ी कीमत चुकानी पड़ भी रही है। गुजरात दंगों से भी बहुत पहले से ही तीस्ता, उनके साथी और उनका संगठन (Citizens of Justice and Peace) दंगा प्रभावित इलाकों और उनके लोगों के लिए काम करते रहे हैं। लेकिन जिस तरह से गुजरात दंगों के बाद कुछ ख़ास तरह के लोगों द्वारा उनके काम और विश्वसनीयता पर सवाल उठाए गए उससे साफ़ होता है कि लड़ाई इस बार बेहद चालाक और घाघ किस्म के लोगों से है। एक ही किताब में जहाँ ज़किया जाफ़री, बिलकिस बानो के संघर्ष की कहानी है वहीँ माया कोडनानी और ज़ाहिरा शेख़ जैसे किरदार भी हैं। और यही तीस्ता के संघर्ष का सार भी है, कि कैसे जीवन के अनुभव कई बार दो ध्रुव पर खड़े होते हैं।

हालांकि हर पीढ़ी और समय को तीस्ता जैसे लोगों की ज़रूरत होती है लेकिन मौजूदा समय में तीस्ता का होना बहुत हिम्मत देता है। ये भीड़ की सत्ता का समय है, जहां भीड़ ही सत्ता और न्यायपालिका चलाने के अधिकार छीन रही है और ऐसे में तीस्ता, उनके साथी और उनका संगठन भीड़ को कटघरे में खड़ा करने की ज़ुर्रत करते हैं। जिन लोगों के लगता है कि हम एक लोकतंत्र और सेक्युलर देश हैं उन्हें मालूम होना चाहिए कि जो भी थोड़ा बहुत लोकतंत्र और सेक्युलर देश बचा है वो तीस्ता जैसे लोगों के वजह से ही है। और जैसा किसी ने कहा था कि, "You can love your country without loving your government", बस इतनी सी बात समझने की ज़रूरत है। 

देश में कुछेक संगठनों की ज़रूरत सरकार के काम को मॉनिटर करने की होती है, जिसमें सांप्रदायिक सौहार्द, मौलिक अधिकार, सूचना के अधिकार, दलित, पिछड़े, अल्पसंख्यकों और मानवाधिकार, क़ानूनी सहायता आदि जैसे मुद्दों पर सरकार की जवाबदेही तय करना भी आता है। ऐसे में CJP जैसे संगठन जो सरकार को उसकी नाकामी पर सवाल करते हैं, कटघरे में खड़ा करते हैं, लोगों को उनके अधिकारों के बारे में जागरूक करते हैं, वो तो सरकार की आँख की किरकिरी बनते ही हैं। 

ये किताब शुरुआत से लेकर अंत तक हमें तीस्ता से मिलवाती है और बताती है कि सच सिर्फ़ उतना नहीं जितना हमें अभी तक मालूम है। कि कैसे दंगा पीड़ितों के लिए न्याय की हर कोशिश करने वाली तीस्ता अपनी माँ होने की ज़िम्मेदारी के साथ भी न्याय करती हैं। कि कैसे तमाम तक़लीफ़ों, अनिश्चितताओं के बावजूद वो सुनिश्चित करती है कि कोई लड़ाई अधूरी न रह जाए। 

मैंने ये किताब 10 दिन पहले पूरी पढ़ ली थी लेकिन अब भी बार बार वापस जाती हूं और सोचती हूं कि हम जो रोज़मर्रा की तक़लीफ़ों से भी बेहद परेशान हो जाते हैं उन्हें शर्म आनी चाहिए। मैंने हमेशा तीस्ता को मुस्कुराते देखा है, उन दिनों भी जब मौजूदा सरकार का सरकारी तोता अपनी सरकार के लिए उनसे हर रोज़ पूछताछ करता था। 

ऐसी किताबें सिर्फ़ कुछ घटनाओं को दर्ज़ करने के लिए ही ज़रूरी नहीं है बल्कि वो उन लोगों और उनके संघर्ष, उनकी जीवटता को दर्ज़ करने के लिए ज़रूरी है जिन्हें भविष्य में याद रखना उन घटनाओं को याद रखने से थोड़ा ज़्यादा अहम है। आपको ढेर सारा प्यार और ख़ूब ताकत मिलती रहे तीस्ता...प्यार
