Pinarayi Vijayan was among the first ten opposition MLAs who were taken into custody immediately after the declaration of Emergency in 1975. On the night of September 28, 1975, Pinarayi (then 30) was arrested and taken to the Koothuparambu police station. Five policemen beat him up through the day. His legs were broken.
