Habib Tanvir

It is appropriate that SAHMAT should take the lead in honouring the memory of Habib Tanvir. Tanvir was not only among the most significant cultural figures of modern India, but also shared with SAHMAT a strong commitment to secularism and democracy. These concerns informed his work throughout his career. He was a friend of Safdar Hashmi whom he loved and respected as a younger colleague in theatre and with whom he worked on several productions. After Safdar's brutal murder, Tanvir helped found Safdar Hashmi Memorial Trust and remained actively associated with it throughout his life.
