About the Book

This volume deals with the contempo-rary ecological crisis. Focused on the threat that capitalism, as a system governed by the logic of profit “realization” and capital accumulation, has today come to pose to the ecology of our planet as the habitat of the human species, the argument ranges over a wide field – the historical context of the ecological crisis, population, poverty and environment, different schools of ecology, especially biocentric environmentalism, anthropocentrism, politics of the environmental movement, human’s alienation from nature, ‘cunming of capital’, ‘environmental colonialism’, ‘Ecological Economics’, ‘productionism’ and ‘economism’ in Marxism, Marx’s so called ‘Prometheanism’, the environmental failure in the Soviet Union, and so on.

Randhir Singh

Randhir Singh, a distinguished teacher and former Professor of Political Theory, University of Delhi, is the author of Reason, Revolution and Political Theory; Five Lectures in Marxist Mode; Marxism, Socialism, Indian Politics – A View from the Left; Contemporary Ecological Crisis – A Marxist View; Indian Politics Today – An Argument for Socialism-Oriented Path of Development and Struggle for Socialism – Some Issues. He has been associated with the communist movement since 1939. Of his writings, Harry Magdoff, editor, Monthly Review, has said: 'I admire the solidity of your analysis as well as the firmness of your commitment.'
