The Art of the Revolution will be Internationalist

Speakers:

Vasudha Thozhur, Visual Artist, Art Educator
Ashutosh Bhardwaj, Visual Artist, Associate Professor, Shiv Nadar University

Followed by a screening of Gandhi Ashram to Vatva: A Journey, a photo essay by Vasudha Thozhur

‘The art of the Revolution will be internationalist, at the same time as it will be tightly bound to the national roots. We shall encourage the legitimate and combative cultural expressions of Latin America, Asia and Africa, which imperialism tries to destroy. Our cultural institutions shall be vehicles of the true artists of these continents, of the neglected, of the persecuted, of those who do not allow themselves to be domesticated by cultural colonialism and who fight together with their people in the struggle against imperialism.’

– A mission statement from the 1971 Congress on Education and Culture in Cuba. (from the dossier)

Born in 1956 in Mysore, Vasudha Thozhur studied at the College of Arts and Crafts, Madras, and at the School of Art and Design at Croydon, UK. Her practice is interdisciplinary but primarily rooted in painting. She lived and worked in Chennai between 1981 and 1997, and in Baroda between 1997 and 2013. Besides exhibitions and residencies, she is involved with institutional work related to teaching and education in general. Two grants from the India Foundation for the Arts, Bangalore supported a research project, ‘The Himmat Workshops’, which looked at ways of rooting art practice in ground and other realities, with particular reference to conflict zones. It involved collaborating with Himmat, an activist organization based in Vatva, Ahmedabad, between 2002 and 2007. A compilation of the outcome, entitled Beyond Pain: An Afterlife, was exhibited in Mumbai in 2013 and New Delhi in 2015.

Ashutosh Bhardwaj responds to the contemporary, cosmopolitan nature of urban India in his paintings and sculptures. Based in India, he deploys mass media imagery as metaphors to highlight how news and commercial media sources have been transformed into mouthpieces. He completed his bachelor's and master's from Maharaja Sayajirao University, where he also taught as an assistant professor for four years, before joining Shiv Nadar University as an associate professor. He has exhibited in various galleries, like Vadehra Art Gallery, Guild Art Gallery(Mumbai), San Jose Museum(U.S.), and various museums in South Korea, to name a few.
