The first socialist state in history lasted only seventy years. This is a very small period of time in the scope of world history. Its achievements have been pilloried – its demise being the greatest argument against its achievements. But merely because it disappeared does not mean that it was without merit. It provides us with the assurance that a workers and peasants’ state can exist, that it can create policies to benefit the vast masses of the people rather than merely the rich, that it can heal and educate rather than merely starve and kill.

Red October is an invitation to rediscover the importance of the Russian Revolution, to explore how it faltered and to nudge us to consider the ghosts of that revolution in our own movements today.

Prabir Purkayastha

Prabir Purkayastha is an engineer and a science activist in the power, telecom and software sectors. He is a founding member of the Delhi Science Forum. He is the author of Knowledge as Commons: Towards Inclusive Science and Technology (LeftWord 2023) and co-author, along with Vijay Prashad, of Enron Blowout: Corporate Capitalism and Theft of the Global Commons (LeftWord 2002), and along with Ninan Koshy, M.K. Bhadrakumar, of Uncle Sam’s Nuclear Cabin (LeftWord 2007). He is co-editor with Indranil and Richa Chintan of Political Journeys in Health: Essays by and for Amit Sengupta (LeftWord 2021). Amar Farooqui is Professor of History, University of Delhi. He taught history for many years at Hans Raj College, Delhi; and has been Fellow, Nehru Memorial Museum and Library, New Delhi. His publications include Early Social Formations (2002); Smuggling as Subversion: Colonialism, Indian Merchants and the Politics of Opium, 1790-1843 (revised edition, 2005); Opium City: The Making of Early Victorian Bombay (2006); Sindias and the Raj: Princely Gwalior, c. 1800-1850 (2011), and Zafar and the Raj: Anglo-Mughal Delhi, c. 1800-1850 (2013).

He has co-edited The Cambridge Economic History of India, Vol. I (1982), UNESCOS History of Humanity, Vols. 4 and 5, and UNESCOS History of Central Asia, Vol. 5. He is the General Editor of the Peoples History of India, and has authored several volumes in the series.
